Fibromyalgia and Sex Can Be A Pain In The Neck...and Back and Shoulders

Book expected release: February, 2007

The thoughts of writing this book came after realizing that winning at The Fibro Hand by functioning day to day is a major accomplishment, however, we also need to function in a very inimate and personal matter of expression, the expression of love to another sexually.  This is a very important, personal, and intimate topic for myself, and I hope to share a little of my trials and tribulations with my syndrome and how it affects one's marriage in both a positive and negative way.
If you haven't read my book, The Fibro Hand, that contains great detail at how I took the hand I was dealt in life, Fibromyalgia, and made it a winning one, I have included some details of my dealings with the syndrome on a day to day basis.  If you have read it, please forgive me for repeating myself.
Before diagnoses, (which took two years) I was a very tired individual that could barely stand up to cook a three minute egg let alone engage in an intimate encounter with my husband.  Grinning through the pain became a normal part of my day and a normal part of my night throughout my twenties.  Aches and pains are a part of life and I just thought that as you get older, you're just supposed to expect it, especially if you were a danger-prone kid who managed to somehow damage, pull,or stress every joint possible...

Holding things grew harder when I had my new born in one hand while trying to mix formula in the other.  Sometimes you can't open the can or even screw the nipple back on without putting down your starving baby to use two limp and unworkable hands.  And then there was holding a coffee cup with two hands instead of one so you wouldn't spill it every morning, something I thought I'd never have to do again after mastering one-handedness at five years old.
I felt like a helpless child and thought I was whining too much when I'd as my husband for a backrub before sex...
The fun grew harder when moving into positions was followed be excruciating pain...
Scott and I had a long disscusion that lead him to say to me, Kim, if it bothers you-- it bothers others.  Start the book and let me know when we can have some fun with the research." (Insert laugh from husband here.) And so, a book idea was born.

**Her other book The Fibro Hand is now available in paperback!

#2"Fibromyalgia and Sex Can be a Pain in the Neck...and back and shoulders"

Inspirational author Kimberley Linstruth-Beckom inspires readers again with her straight talk on intimacy and what happens to sex in a marriage when one partner has Fibromyalgia. Her newest book, "Fibromyalgia and Sex Can be a Pain in the Neck...and back and shoulders", will be available to the public this week through Lulu. It will reach some main stream book stores by the end of the month.

February 9, 2007 -- Author Kimberley Linstruth-Beckom has come out with her second book of the year entitled "Fibromyalgia and Sex Can Be a Pain in the Neck...and back and shoulders".

This book is currently available on Lulu and should reach main stream book stores by the end of the month. "Some 3-6 million Americans suffer from this chronic condition according to The American College of Rheumatology, and I became part of those numbers in late 2005," said Linstruth-Beckom.

"Fibromyalgia effects everyone differently, but the most common symptom is widespread, chronic muscle and joint pain. I wrote this latest book to help myself and others with the pain that Fibromyalgia can cause for couples."

Kimberley has been writing for over half of her life and is best know for her poetry. "Fibromyalgia and Sex Can be a Pain in the Neck..." is her second full-length book on this debilitating condition. Her first book, "The Fibro Hand", written in 2006, shows readers how the author copeed with the diagnoses of Fibromyalgia in her daily life. "I had written 'The Fibro Hand' for the individual struggling with this condition in their day to day life.

The thoughts of writing the book 'Sex and Fibromyalgia Can Be a Pain in the Neck...', came to me after finishing 'The Fibro Hand'. There isn't much out there to help couples struggling with Fibromyalgia, so I decided to publish the second book after my husband encouraged me to."

About the Author
Kimberley Linstruth-Beckom started her writing career in 1982 at the age of nine. Her first poem "My Favorite Color Is Pink" was published in a local Connecticut newspaper that year. She has received many awards for her achievements in poetry including a nomination for "Best Poet of the 90's". Her first full-length books were published in 2006 through Lulu.com. ~Great book! And highly recommend to read!

Encounters With the Invisible: Unseen Illness, Controversy, And Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Medical Humanities)
by Dorothy Wall (Author), Nancy, M.D. Klimas

List Price:$22.50

Editorial Reviews

~From Booklist
More than 800,000 in the U.S. may suffer from chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome--CFS. Bad enough, Wall says, that they suffer in isolation, often without medical intervention; worse, many with symptoms go undiagnosed. They are frequently dismissed as "mental" by people who expect that everyone always recovers from a bout of flu, which is what CFS initially resembles, complete with sore throat, head- and muscle ache, and fatigue.

With CFS, however, those symptoms escalate for weeks, months, and years. The CFS sufferer becomes increasingly debilitated, incapable of carrying out the most mundane tasks, often bedridden for weeks at a time. It's one thing if people are unsympathetic, but because there is no definitive test to reveal a specific cause, and no renegade germ to blame, physicians have been slow to recognize CFS.
Yet it has been around as a subset of symptoms since the early 1980s, maybe longer. Wall doesn't demonize the medical establishment but does disdain practitioners who write CFS off as "yuppie flu," and leave sufferers feeling isolated and medically invisible.

~Book Description
"An important investigation of a little-understood illness with much to teach doctors and patients alike. General readers will find her personal story compelling as well as beautifully told.Lynne Sharon Schwartz, author of The Fatigue Artist

"Carefully researched and documented, Encounters with the Invisible takes the reader on a sweeping journey of a life, although the story rarely leaves Ms. Wall's bedroom.K. Kimberly McCleary, President, Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome Association of America
Blending personal drama with literary reflection, reportage, and medical history, Dorothy Wall illuminates the conflicts and controversies surrounding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and graphically depicts the way a virus resculpts a life.

Book Review: The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook: Your Self-Treatment Guide for Pain Relief, Second Edition

The first edition of this workbook is regarded as a classic in its field, and was the first book to introduce trigger point therapy to the general public as a self-care tool for alleviating chronic pain caused by a variety of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, muscle ache, and repetitive strain injuries.

As the author makes clear, all such conditions are related to lack of oxygen in exhausted or injured muscle tissue. Trigger point therapy has been used for decades by doctors, pain specialists, and massage therapists to quickly stimulate the flow of oxygen and promote rapid pain reduction.

This book makes the same techniques available to the general public with instructions that are easy to follow, and abetted by an extensive collection of charts and corresponding illustrations. The author’s interest in trigger point therapy began when he used it to successfully treat his frozen shoulder.

Since that time, he has dedicated himself to teaching others the same techniques. That dedication is obvious throughout his writing and the care he takes to make the therapy understandable to the lay public. Also included in this new edition is updated information that should be of great interest to pain specialists and bodyworkers, as well as useful instruction in a variety of relaxation techniques. Overall, this book is an excellent self-care resource for anyone interested in pain relief.--Larry Trivieri Jr.

From Fatigued to Fantastic!' Provides Antidote to Energy Crisis

NEW YORK, Oct. 10 ,2007 The "perfect storm" in American health has already hit. Over the past 10 years, the incidence of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FMS) has exploded by 400 to 1000 percent, as documented in five separate studies. The numbers for those with CFS in the U.S., previously estimated at 500,000, are now being re-tallied at closer to 2.5 million. Previous estimates placed the number of Americans with FMS at 6 million. Studies worldwide suggest this has likely gone up in the last decade to approximately 24 million Americans.

The publication of From Fatigued to Fantastic! (Avery/Penguin Group USA, Oct. 4, 2007) by board certified internist Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, provides a timely solution following the recent recognition by the CDC, NIH, and FDA that CFS and FMS are bona fide and devastating illnesses. Newly updated in a third edition, the best-seller which has sold over 500,000 copies provides a comprehensive understanding of CFS/FMS and the latest research, as well as a step-by-step guide to the "SHIN protocol" that has helped so many thousands of these patients get their lives back.

"CFS and Fibromyalgia are not the 'yuppie flu' as they have been called. They are the signature diseases of modern life," explains Dr. Teitelbaum, who himself suffered from the disease as a medical student. "If you're exhausted and unable to sleep, experience brain fog, weight gain and low libido, you probably have CFS; if you have widespread pain as well, then you likely also have fibromyalgia. They're two sides of the same coin.

"CFS/FMS reflects a personal energy crisis where more energy is spent than the body is able to produce," says Dr. Teitelbaum. "The area using the most energy, the hypothalamus, effectively blows a fuse and since it controls sleep along with hormonal function, blood pressure and body temperature, people are unable to sleep even though they're exhausted. The energy meltdown also causes widespread muscle shortening (think: writers cramp or rigor mortis) with widespread pain."

Dr. Teitelbaum's "SHIN Protocol," featured in the book and published in the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (8:2, 2001), was found to improve the quality of life an average of 75 percent at 3 months and 90 percent at 2 years, with 90 percent of the study patients improving. "SHIN" addresses four vital areas of health: Sleep; Hormonal deficiencies (despite normal blood tests); Infections; and Nutritional deficiencies.

Another study by Dr. Teitelbaum published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (12:9, 2006) showed that a simple 5-carbon sugar called ribose (5000 mg 3x/day) increased energy in fibromyalgia patients by an average of 45 percent after only two weeks.

"Having had CFS and Fibromyalgia back in 1975, which left me homeless for much of the year, I know what patients are going through," says Dr. Teitelbaum. "The good news is that it is now 2007 and these illnesses have become very treatable!" For more information on Dr. Teitelbaum's work, visit http://www.Vitality101.com.

Author Kimberley Linstruth-Beckom has been named as one of Lulu’s top creators due to the popularity of her two books on the chronic condition Fibromyalgia. It was hard to find a lot of information because the syndrome was still so new. I wrote The Fibro Hand as my antidote.”

Fibromyalgia and Sex Can Be A Pain In The Neck…and back and shoulders is Linstruth-Beckom’s second book on the subject. “This book was born with the help of my husband. He and I knew that there are a lot of couples struggling with intimacy when one partner has Fibromyalgia. This book contains our take on the art of intimacy.”

The New Fibromyalgia Remedy by Daniel Dantini.

Non fiction~Debilitating pain and tenderness in muscles, ligaments, and tendons are the typical symptoms of fibromyalgia, and this guide by a medical researcher of the disease dismisses traditional treatment—heat, exercise, and rest—in favor of antiviral medications that often provide immediate relief and eventual complete recovery.

You: Being Beautiful Authors Mehmet Oz, MD, & Michael Roizen, MD, Call Ribose One of the Decade's 'Real Nutritional Heroes'

Core energy nutrient offers natural antidote to fatigue in many forms

Jan. 5,2009~In their latest book, You: Being Beautiful - The Owner's Manual to Inner and Outer Beauty (Free Press, 2008), co-authors Mehmet Oz, MD and Michael Roizen, MD ஐﻬ refer to ribose as one of the decade's "real nutritional heroes" that can "turbo-charge" those who need an energy boost. Ribose is a naturally occurring 5-carbon sugar the body uses to stimulate the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) -- an essential energy compound.

Although ribose is produced by the body, this energy molecule cannot be replenished fast enough during certain times of demanding exercise, stress, or as a result of many chronic diseases. When added to foods ஐﻬ and dietary supplements, D-Ribose enhances the body's natural process of energy synthesis. It reduces the loss of energy during stress, and accelerates energy and tissue recovery and the management of free radicals.

According to Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, Medical Director of the national Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers, Inc., and best-selling author of From Fatigued to Fantastic! (Penguin Group), we are in the midst of a human energy crisis. "We're witnessing an emerging worldwide exhaustion epidemic," said Teitelbaum. "The increased stress ஐﻬ of modern life combined with poor sleep and nutrition is being reflected not only in the high levels of fatigue but in the accompanying epidemic of pain currently experienced by one in four Americans along with heart disease, the number one killer in the United States."

Dr. Teitelbaum's research published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (12:9, 2006), found a full two-thirds of his patients reported improvement of their symptoms in the first 12 days following a course of Corvalen(R) D-Ribose treatment. The average improvement in energy was 45 percent and ஐﻬ quality of life improved an average of 30 percent. Patients reported less muscle soreness and stiffness, better ability to overcome fatigue, as well as simply feeling better. "Supplemental Corvalen(R) is part of a clinically proven program we've developed that is helping millions of people overcome the debilitating effects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and ஐﻬ fibromyalgia as well as a general malaise of exhaustion," said Teitelbaum. Corvalen(R) is also used by physicians to treat congestive heart failure and to prepare patients for off-pump bypass surgery(1).

"Bioenergy D-Ribose(TM) also has sweeping applications for healthy people who need more energy every day," said Raj Khankari, Ph.D., CEO of Bioenergy, Inc. "It is already widely used as an effective training and recoveryஐﻬ  tool by high-performance athletes. We've only scratched the surface on the wide-ranging health and training benefits of this nutritional powerhouse."

Bioenergy, Inc. -- The Ribose Company(TM) -- (http://www.bioenergy.com), recently achieved GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status for D-Ribose from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The privately held,ஐﻬ  Minneapolis-based life sciences company has amassed a large body of scientific literature on the uses of ribose for people across all age and health categories. It has more than 40,000 customers for its proprietary Corvalen(R) products alone, and millions worldwide use Bioenergy D-Ribose(TM) in other functional foods like energy bars (Detour, FastFuel, Marathon) and beverages (SoBe Adrenaline Rush, Vitamin Water, Snapple Antioxidant Water). Currently, Bioenergy D-Ribose(TM) is included as an ingredient in approximately 100 products. ஐﻬ The company's core technology lies in the development and commercialization of products based on the physiological benefits of D-Ribose for health and wellness.

Book answers questions about fibromyalgia
May 25, 2009

100 Questions Answers About Fibromyalgia is a new book written by Sharon Ostalecki, Ph.D., an expert on fibromyalgia who lives with the condition, and Martin Tamler, M.D. They focus on symptoms, diagnosis, causes, associated medical conditions related to Fibromylagia, and current treatments including traditional and alternative approaches. It provides practical answers to common questions about fibromyalgia to help patients and families understand their options regarding access to treatment and provides a greater understanding of this disease.

Fibromyalgia, characterized by chronic muscle and joint pain, extremely poor stamina, cognitive problems, sleep disorders and numerous other symptoms, has been afflicting people around the world in alarming numbers. Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 10 million people in the U.S., most of whom are women between 20 and 60 years-old.
Breakthroughs have been made in understanding what fibromyalgia is and how doctors, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals diagnose and treat the disorder. There are new medications that help manage pain as well as enhance sleep. The book addresses new medications and management strategies.
This is Ostalecki's second book. Her non-profit organization, Helping Our Pain and Exhaustion (H.O.P.E) is dedicated to helping those with Fibromyalgia. H.O.P.E recently launched a new support group at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. The group meets once a month at 7 p.m. Information about this support group is available by visiting www.hffcf.org
100 Questions Answers About Fibromyalgia is$19.99, and available by visiting H.O.P.E's website, hffcf.org.
