Kidney Treatment Expensive

29 April 2008
The Kenya Kidney and Lupus Foundation has asked the Government to reduce the cost of dialysis and kidney transplants in public hospitals.

This will help save lives of thousands of patients who cannot afford medication.

The foundation Director, Mrs Jean Banda, said the Government should also help reduce the costs of post-transplant medication.

She said only about 300 patients were able to access medication compared to 3.5 million with kidney-related ailments.

"If these could be subsidised, there would be less mortality rates and more kidney transplants. At the moment, most patients are seeking treatment and drugs from India because of the low prices," said Banda.

She said it costs Sh750,000 to have a kidney transplant in a public hospital while a leading private hospital charged Sh1.2 million.

Banda said the foundation was also planning to lobby the Government through relevant authorities and ministries to put in place a law on organ donation.

This would look at the possibility of harvesting organs from willing donors.

Banda said another challenge was persuading insurance companies to cover some of the dialysis and transplant costs even if it was at a premium.
