Niles, MI~ Water therapy for Fibro patients

 Lakeland Rehabilitation Services has added aquatic therapy to its services. Aquatic therapy is often recommended for individuals with medical conditions including arthritis or joint pain, poor balance, obesity, fibromyalgia and neurological disorders.

Dawn Frese, manager of Lakeland Rehabilitation Services in Niles, said, “The water creates a gravity-reduced atmosphere that helps patients meet their therapy goals. The buoyancy helps to relieve the weight of the body, promoting relaxation and enhancing freedom of movement for increased muscle tone.”

The benefits of aquatic therapy include:

# Reduced pain, stiffness and muscle spasms;

# Improved posture, balance and coordination;

# Increased circulation, range of motion, strength and endurance; and

# Increased mobility.

Therapy sessions take place in a handicap-accessible pool and the water is heated to 94 degrees. Exercises are led by a licensed physical therapist and physical therapy assistants.

Aquatic therapy sessions are offered by Lakeland all day Monday through Friday at the
Niles-Buchanan YMCA, 905 N. Front St.
A physician’s referral is required.
