Jets Lupus Awareness Day

New York City - Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR), Davis Vision and the Jets Women’s Organization (JWO) present Jets ALR Lupus Awareness Day on October 22, 2006, at The Meadowlands.
This event will raise awareness and educate Jets fans and others on this life-threatening disease.
To date, Jets events supporting lupus research have raised over $2 million. Prior to the New York Jets v. Detroit Lions kickoff at 1:00 p.m., JWO members and ALR staff and volunteers will distribute 50,000 purple bracelets and collect donations from fans entering the stadium gates. New York City Walk With Us to Cure Lupus Walkathon Co-Chair Claudine Mauriello, and Special Events Manager for RWJ University Hospital, Debra Miller, will serve as honorary captains for the opening coin toss.
The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) is a national voluntary health organization based in New York City that was founded in 1999 and is chaired by Robert Wood Johnson IV, a member of the founding family of Johnson & Johnson and owner of the New York Jets.
The mission of the ALR is to support research into the cause, cure, treatment and prevention of systemic lupus erythematosus (commonly known as lupus) and its complications. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect almost every major organ in the body, including the joints, heart, kidneys, skin, lungs, and brain. This disease afflicts as many as one million Americans, ninety percent of whom are women. Extremely difficult to diagnose, lupus is the leading cause of death among women in their childbearing years with autoimmune diseases
